Syllabus Breakdown
CAT has three sections, each timed and attempted separately — you can't move between sections once the clock starts on one.
1 Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)
Reading comprehension passages (typically the largest share of this section), para-jumbles, para-summary, odd-sentence-out, and verbal reasoning. Strong reading speed and inference skills matter more here than memorized grammar rules.
2 Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)
Data interpretation sets (tables, graphs, charts requiring calculation) and logical reasoning puzzles (arrangements, sequencing, games & tournaments, network diagrams). This section is widely considered the most time-pressured of the three.
3 Quantitative Ability (QA)
Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry & Mensuration, Number Systems, and Modern Math (permutations & combinations, probability, sequences & series) — drawing on concepts through roughly a Class 10-12 level, but applied to unfamiliar, tightly-timed problems.
